Opinion: “Moms For Liberty”
Parental rights group, Moms for Liberty is a fast-growing organization that has launched 5 chapters since forming in January and is currently fielding chapter requests in over 15 states.
Founded by former school board members, Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich, the group unifies parents, grandparents, educators and community members to exercise their voices in standing up for parental rights and defending liberty in local government.
Justice and Descovich have witnessed firsthand the gaping disconnect that exists between families and ‘the system.’ Parents often feel they are up against a machine and are left feeling unheard and frustrated. Together they are leading the effort to close that gap and effect lasting change.
The truth is the balance of power in education has dramatically shifted away from parents and communities to unions and bureaucrats. They are fighting to restore the role of primary decision maker for children back to parents by helping them organize and amplify their voices.
Moms for Liberty has six objectives as an organization which include:
Holding leaders accountable by organizing chapters in communities around the country. Each chapter will keep a close watch on policies and laws impacting children and parental rights in their community. They sound a “liberty alert” when policies come forward that could threaten a parent’s right to direct the upbringing of their child.
Spreading an understanding of the limited role of government by shining a light on government overreach at every level. Over the last several decades, the government, and more specifically school boards, have taken a larger role in raising the children in America. The school building and classroom have become the “dumping ground” for every social program introduced and the actual education of children is suffering. Education needs to focus on getting children prepared to be critical thinkers in this ever-changing world.
Teaching the principles of liberty in their homes and communities. By challenging all Americans, especially parents to read The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, they will glean a better understanding of the foundations of our government and to become more familiar with the principles of liberty. Education truly begins at home and it is vital that parents understand these principles so that their children will be raised to honor and value them. These book-club-style groups are affectionately called “Madison Meetups” after the Father of the Constitution, James Madison. Friends and families throughout the country are meeting in small groups to discuss our founding documents and what the relation is to the events of today.
Standing against government intimidation tactics by encouraging moms to join and speak at their school board and local government meetings together. It is key to point out tactics used by officials that are condescending, unprofessional and attempt to silence dissenting voices. Also, leaders will be highlighted that try to shame or minimize public input to policy making. Many local government entities have gone unnoticed and unchecked for so long they are uncomfortable as the public starts to take notice and become involved. Our government was set up so that “The People” have a voice in the process and it is time that voice is heard. We encourage all that want their voice heard to attend and speak at your local government meetings.
Engaging elected officials on key issues impacting families and parental rights through a multitude of avenues including postcard writing campaigns, phone calls, meetings and office visits. Letting current elected officials know that we are engaged and watching their votes will influence their decision-making process.
Working to promote liberty-minded individuals to serve in elected positions. Moms for Liberty chapters will work to strengthen relationships with those leaders that stand up for families and parental rights and will fight to replace all elected officials that ignore moms and the voices of liberty. We need leaders in all levels of government that are willing to stand strong for the best interest of children and families.
Moms are awake to the realities of our current education system for the first time in a long while, but they often do not know what to do with their frustration and concern. Moms for Liberty is taking that frustration and using it to impact real, lasting change for a better future for America. Their goal is to have a Moms for Liberty chapter in every school district in the nation. They will serve as the protectors of liberty at the local level. These chapters bring together moms, dads, grandparents and community members that put one thing first, kids.
John Adams said, “Liberty once lost is lost forever.” Moms for Liberty is working to make sure liberty is forever protected for our children.
